Mrs Kidawa-Błońska published her appeal on Facebook and addressed it ‘to all candidates’ running in the presidential election
It is an answer to a surprising amendment proposed and voted thorough by PiS during the late night distance proceedings of the Sejm, which changes the Electoral Code. The ruling party wants to allow postal voting on May 10 for all those in quarantine or self-isolation and to voters aged over 60.
These changes are violating earlier rulings from the Constitutional Tribunal saying that the Electoral Code cannot be altered later than six months before opening the polling stations. It also violates the Sejm’s rules on the proceedings regarding the electoral laws.
Mrs Kidawa-Błońska said: „As a nation and as a society we are facing an unprecedented danger in our recent history. It is a threat to lives, health and livelihoods of Poles. There is no other task in Poland now except for tackling the pandemic and its effects.
“Under current circumstances allowing the presidential election would be a reckless. One cannot endanger people’s lives. We must all abide this rule and it applies especially to those who are running for the highest office in the country.
“I cannot imagine, how one could ask people for their trust and require them to risk their lives at the same time. That is why the presidential election scheduled for May 10, 2000 must be called off!”
She added: “Were the members of ruling party stuck in their obstinance, they must accept full responsibility for the gruesome effects it will have on public health and people lives.
“Under the circumstances I call to the voters not to go to the polls on May 10. If there is no alternative, let us answer the decisionmakers’ thoughlessness with a nationwide boycott. The election shall be called when it is possible and safe for the public to do so.”
The letter is finished with an appeal to other parties’ candidates ‘to do the right thing and stand clear, as it is a test of our decency and responsibility’. “If we stand united, we will win against the odds”, the opposition front-runner added.
It is unclear how will the other candidates react, but the Left’s Robert Biedroń has mentioned the possibility of boycotting the election earlier.
