Commissioner McCreevy Is Wrong

The European Commission criticises Poland for trying to cut the open pension funds' commissions. Charlie McCreevy, the Commissioner for the Internal Market and Services, has written Labour Minister Jolanta Fedak that the decision may violate economic freedom. This is a highly peculiar opinion.

The government wants to bring forward the cut in commissions, which would take place anyway, because it is provided for in the law on open pension funds (OFEs). Today, the OFEs charge usually a 7-percent commission on its members' contributions. That would drop to 3.5 percent as early as next year.

It is hard to understand why Commissioner McCreevy sees this is a violation of economic freedom....
