The PO, PSL, and Left caucuses have pledged support for a resolution urging President Lech Kaczyński to sign the Lisbon Treaty. The resolution is to be put to a vote today.

Krzysztof Lisek (PO), head of the parliament's Foreign Affairs Committee, said his caucus wanted to learn the 'actual reasons why President Lech Kaczyński is hindering the process of the ratification of the Lisbon treaty.'

'We want to know your position, sir. Not learn it from the press or from your ministers, but directly from you,' appealed the PO deputy, according to whom the president has been delaying the ratification 'ad infinitum.'

The draft resolution says, among other things: 'Acknowledging that the endorsement of the treaty is a sovereign decision of each member state, the Sejm appeals to the President to pay heed to the will of both houses of parliament and urgently complete the process of the Lisbon treaty's ratification, as well as to actively support its ratification in the other EU member states.'

Mr Lisek said that the treaty's implementation would give Poland important policy instruments, such as closer cooperation on common foreign and security policy and energy solidarity.

'A lack of ratification could result in a two-speed Europe, which would be unfavourable for Poland,' said Mr Lisek.

Polish Peasant Party (PSL) and Left deputies spoke in a similar tone. Only the opposition Law and Justice (PiS) caucus says it will not support the resolution. Ex-deputy foreign minister Paweł Kowal (PiS) said voting on the resolution made no sense.

'It is not Poland that has a problem with European treaty and it is not us who have a problem with the Lisbon treaty. We have a problem with a serious European debate,' stressed Mr Kowal.
