Poland Proves Successful in Absorption of EU Funds

Poland has already spent close to 90 percent of the EU structural funds for 2004-2006! But rapidly growing capital investment costs mean that the funds will suffice for less than planned in the future.

Puławy, a city with a population of 50,000, some 50 km north-west of Lublin, has for two weeks now had a new crossing over the Vistula: the largest arched bridge in Poland. The whole bridge has over 1,000 m in length, and the main span is 212 m long. The whole project, including a ring road for the city, cost as much as PLN 481 million, but three fourths of that was paid for by the EU.

The new crossing ends a nightmare that haunted Puławy for years....
