Mr Lukashenko's 'Muzzle Bill'

It could seem that the Belarussian press has been so stifled by the Lukashenko regime and pressed against the wall that turning the screw further was simply impossible. But the dictator has obviously decided to strive towards the absolute and is presenting his country with a new law, rightly called the 'muzzle bill'

According to what the pseudo-parliament passed at full speed Saturday and what Mr Lukashenko will sign any moment now, Belarus's government ministry misleadingly known as the Ministry of Information is now being transformed into a truly Orwellian Ministry of Truth. It will now be in charge of deciding whether a piece of news reported is 'harmful for the state and society' and if so, of punishing the author....
