Every four years I'm touched when the final runner in the Olympic flame relay lights up the torch at the stadium. Perhaps this is how a great show works? Or some youthful sentiment? But I'm touched, every time. And I couldn't have imagined only a couple of months ago I'd be happy as a lark that street protesters have forced a member of the relay to put out the torch.

What is going around the Beijing Games is quite incredible. The world's political, corporate and sporting establishment wanted to simply ignore the Chinese regime's totalitarian excesses - and it didn't work. The Tibetans received support from people of good will from all over the world - thousands of larger and smaller organisations, internet users, human rights activists. This truly global movement has already proved so strong that whatever happens, China has already lost the PR operation called 'the Beijing Olympics'....
