The Church hierarchs' militant reaction to the new education minister Ryszard Legutko's doubts whether the mark in religion should count in the student's school-leaving average mark is incompatible with the language of my Church.

It was unnecessary, in fact, because it's a long way from doubts to a decision. Even if Mr Legutko wanted to amend the ordinance in force, he would have to consult the Churches, something he seems to have been unaware of.

The Episcopate, discreet and laconic when Father Rydzyk's even most scandalous statements are concerned, this time spoke in one voice, and thunderously. A minor (inadvertent?) comment made by a cabinet member caused such a violent defence of something the Church deemed its success? And the defence proved effective: the government promptly fell to its knees....
