Georgian Ambassador: Their Goal Was to Overthrow Saakashvili

The ultimate goal of the Russian operation in Georgia was to overthrow President Mikheil Saakashvili, as he strives to integrate his country with the Nato and the EU, Georgian ambassador Konstantin Kavtaradze tells Gazeta.

Gazeta asked the ambassador about the origins of the Russian-Georgian war, about whether President Saakashvili, issuing on 7 August the order to attack the rebel province of South Ossetia, wasn't making a fatal mistake, provoking Russia and giving it as perfect opportunity to counterattack. Mr Kavtaradze said the war didn't begin that night but much earlier. Moscow had been preparing to attack Georgia ever since the Rose Revolution that swept the pro-Western Mr Saakashvili to power....
